Radu Băieş & Laurentiu Zbîrcea
Opening: Tuesday 23 April 2024

Venue: Bold Gallery, U Měšt'anského pivovaru 6a, Prague 7
The exhibition is curated by Jan Kudrna and Bogdan Iacob.
The so-called "Cluj school" - i.e. artists who studied or live in Cluj, Romania - is characterised by work with the figure, a certain melancholic, even gloomy quality, but also by an emphasis on the aesthetic value of painting - i.e. on beauty, eroticism and spirituality. In the work of Radu Băieş (*1988), vaguely fantastical, pastoral and mystical scenes recur in the form of landscapes filled with silhouettes of mysterious shepherds reminiscent of saints or figures from Renaissance paintings. On his canvases, Leaurentia Zbircea (b. 2000) weaves a dark yet alluring universe whose surreal labyrinth the viewer navigates with the help of intuitive elements - tropes or attributes - that approximate the mood and setting of the story Zbircea is telling.
