"...The young generation of artists of the Cluj School, such as Laurentiu Zbircea and Radu Baies, are united by the motif of figurative painting. Another common element we would look for in them is a strong reference to the surreal. However, each approaches it autonomously - the young, twenty-four-year-old Zbircea achieves, with the help of many colours, a fierce handwriting that moves on to psychedelic scenes that combine different realities in one time. It is as if you are looking at his paintings through a crystalline object that refuses to show you only one perspective. The figures in his paintings are reminiscent of phantoms, aliens or ominous shadows that break through the gentiles to the surface.In contrast.
Baies' paintings have a poetic feel. His lyrical handwriting refers to the narrative he tells with the help of light, ancient curves and almost mystical moods. An important motif we find in the thirty-six-year-old artist is the tree. We are guided by references to mythology or religious iconography. We feel that the tree, as a motif of the birth of life, as an ancestral legacy, may be somewhat alienated from us in today's world..."
