Aisha Christison b. 1989

Aisha Christison draws inspiration from psychoanalysis in her central pictorial compositions, creating imaginary portraits of the human psyche. The reassuring yet unsettling scenes often depict familiar settings, but are disturbed by unusual subjects or irrational relationships between the depicted elements. Although close to the principles of surrealism, they exist, in the artist's own words, on the edge of verisimilitude. Whether it's a hotel telephone surrounded by birds, a bird's eye view of an aeroplane undergoing a strange metamorphosis, or the elemental chaos of a workbench, Christison masterfully builds tension by characteristically evoking a sense of calm before the storm.
